​​What is the difference between proof-reading and copy editing? 

Proof-reading is about...
  • looking for any spelling errors, double spaces, etc.
  • checking that full stops, commas, colons, semicolons, quotation marks, and apostrophes are used correctly
  • making sure that words that sound like one another but have different meanings, such as there, their, and they’re have been used correctly

Copy editing is about...
  • looking that you have expressed your ideas with the proper words
  • identifying the use of the unnecessary passive voice 
  • checking that the tone is appropriate for the audience
  • getting rid of errors and inconsistencies  

​As you can see, copy-editing is much more thorough and more technical. That is why it costs more.
